What you should know about me.

My name is Carly Benson and I am the woman behind the lens. I am in love with all things photography, both film and digital. When I’m not taking pictures, I can be found exploring new places, making ceramics, printmaking, or teaching art to the next generation.

But what’s more important is that…

I think the human experience is about pushing the boundaries on what we can feel. As a kid, I spent most of my time in my imagination— drawing, writing, creating outfits out of “sewn” together pieces of fabric. As an adult I find myself stepping into my physical self more; learning to feel the world that way, too. I go rock climbing, learn to play by scrambling around coastal rocks, and I revel in a long, long walk. Photography is a way for me to do this while being creative. When I was little I loved to imagine all day long. I wanted to be a writer, an artist, a fashion designer, an interior designer, a teacher, a director. As an adult, I am unafraid to dive head first into my passions. I can’t stop trying new things, collecting new hobbies, and generating ideas. I believe I can learn just about anything that I want to, and what I want to, is make art. I am an observer, a doer, an artist, a storyteller, and my muse is this life.

And what inspires me is…

The glow of fireflies over the back field growing up. The purple flowers that painted that field. Meeting my neighbors in the backwoods path. The weather. The evening primroses that bloom and die in under 5 minutes. A whole, beautiful life lived before my eyes. The moon. Moonflowers. The ocean. My sister. My grandmothers. The sounds of the wind in the leaves in the evening through my screen door. Driftwood. That, when we are children, we can believe in anything.
